This document is searchable using your "Find" function. If you have a PC with Windows, hit CTRL-F and enter your selected keyword(s) to search the listing (e.g. Richmond). I am sure that a MAC has a similar function, but I do not know how it is accessed. Or you can use the database Search Engine below. Click CSA SEARCH for a short tutorial and explanation (opens in new window or separate tab) of how best to use the Search Engine with my databases. The search will show results in the CSA Postal History, CSA Stamp, and CSA Currency databases. Search results automatically appear in a new window or separate tab.
Many of the CSA unused stamps are without gum, and many of the stamps also have very tiny pinholes. The reasons behind this are due to the collectors and the dealers of years past. Collectors of an earlier time purposefully soaked the gum off the unused stamps to protect the stamps from sticking and cracking. In the days before air-conditioners and climate control, these collectors actually did us a great favor by doing this. Otherwise we may not have these stamps to collect today because of the generally very poor gum that was originally used. The small pinholes were usually caused by the dealers of the late 19th century who had the habit of displaying the stamps that they had for sale by pinning them with small straight pins to cork bulletin boards in their shops. I wonder how the collectors 100 years in the future will view our current methods of collecting and preserving. On unused stamps with original gum remaining, the gum has often yellowed and cracked producing gum creases and toning. These gum creases are readily seen in the scans particularly on the CSA #7 Richmond Print stamps. The scans accentuate the gum creases and make them appear much more prominent than they actually are. There are collectors that are interested only in original pristine full-margined OG NH stamps. To these collectors, I wish you every success. Occasionally, I do have such material listed. But please be advised that OG Confederate Stamps (particularly CSA #7, #11, #12) will have gum creases and cracks because of the generally poor condition of the gum to begin with. This is an expected part of CSA collecting. Unused stamps without gum have actually retained a much better color unaffected by gum toning. To the collector that is willing to temper history with condition, I know that you will be greatly rewarded. To those of you that are interested only in gem "post office fresh" condition material and not the history, then I apologize in advance as I can only be of limited assistance. A complete CSA stamp collection with such rigid criteria is essentially unobtainable. Images are available for all the stamps on this listing. Just click on the Inventory Control Number or the thumbnail preceding the description to call up the image and use the back button to return to the listing. Please order using the Inventory Control Number preceding the Item Description. The following Charleston SC 5c Blue Provisional
Stamps come from the Calhoun Collection. The type
letter refers to the
position of the stamp in the transfer block of 15 (3 rows of 5
with 6 transfer blocks forming one sheet in a vertical format) as
determined by Mr. Calhoun and explained in detail in his book Charleston SC and the
Confederate Postmaster Provisionals
(2012). These stamps in used condition almost all have faults of some
type due to the quality of the paper and the printing. These faults are
mostly light creases and/or small thins and/or small edge nicks or
tears. It is very rare to find a completely sound used example showing
all four outer frames complete. This would be a great rarity
and
would command a large premium in value. The stamps offered here have
minor flaws, but it is a good opportunity to add one of these stamps to
a general Confederate collection at a reasonable price. The average used stamp will
only show parts of the outer frames on 2 or 3 sides. |

CSA #62x5 New New Orleans 5c Yellow-Brown Provisional USED (margin close at the top) with the New Orelans, La CDS (date not apparent). | $150.00 |
The following 5c
Brown New Orleans Provisional stamps have the small double circle New
Orleans "River Mail" postmark. This postmark is believed to have been
used dockside on incoming and outgoing river mail. Compared to the
several variations of the large single rim New Orleans postmarks, which
are the most commonly seen New Orleans Confederate postmarks, this
"River Mail" postmark is found only infrequently on the provisional
stamps with also a few examples known on the 5c Green and 5c Blue
Lithographs. The "River Mail"
postmark is known in both red and black. The red example was only used
for a brief two week period in mid June 1861 possibly by Postmaster
Riddell himself and is extremely scarce. It is noted that there
are those who believe that this postmark was not strictly river mail
but could have been used at the general post office as stated
on
Page 471 of the new CSA catalog. The river mail use is based on the
beliefs and writings of noted New Orleans postal historian
the late Dr. Hubert Skinner (Forty-Fourth American Philatelic
Congress Book 1978).
The rarity of the postmark compared to the other New Orleans postmarks
and the association with river mail of the known covers with this
postmark seem to bear this out and speak against the theory
that
this postmark was in general use at the main post office. |

CSA #4ax1 3c Nashville Provisional -- For many decades it was believed that this stamp was prepared by the Nashville postmaster, W. D. McNish, to use for the US rate but was never issued. Recent research and historical evidence suggest that was not the case and that the stamp is really a fantasy item instead. This stamp shown is one that was considered to be genuine for over 150 years and listed as a Confederate 3c Provisional. Because of the recent research, the stamp cannot be certified as genuine. The CWPAS (CWPS Authentication Service) will decline to examine the stamp and decline to issue a certificate either way. There are also known fakes of this stamp by Petrie and others. However, the stamp is still listed and priced in the Scott Catalogue but with the proviso that it is most likely a fantasy item. The 3c Nashville is also listed and priced in the 2012 CSA Catalog because that catalog was published before the new research came to light. The stamp is not for sale but posted for demonstration purposes only. | Not For Sale |

CSA #1 Stone 2 Position 14 USED (4-Margin) tied to small piece by the Camp Shenandoah, Va CDS 11 APR (1862). A small post office complete with a postmarking device was established at Camp Shenandoah, Va in Augusta County in the Shenandoah Mountains. There are only a small handful of covers known with this postmark (BE115 in the Bush Exhibit Section) and all are dated between 11 APR 1862 and 16 APR 1862 and all the known covers are army related. Camp Shenandoah served as a temporary army camp at that time. It seems apparent that the Camp Shenandoah post office was established in order to service the army mail as the post office ceased operations by 20 APR 1862 when the army moved on. The Camp Shenandoah, Va postmark is listed as an army field postmark in the 1986 New Dietz catalog but has been deleted from the army listings by the editors of the new CSA catalog with the statement that the post office was opened on personal initiative and did not have official status. Unfortunately, the Camp Shenandoah mark is not illustrated or valued in the new CSA catalog. Whether the Camp Shenendoah post office was official or unofficial is really beside the point. It was definitely a functioning temporary post office serving the army with its own postmark of which there are less than 10 recorded covers and only a few recorded off-cover stamps with this postmark. All the stamps are 5c lithographs -- most are the 5c Blue with a few being the 5c Green. This stamp shows the earliest recorded date of use for this limited postmark. Minor edge gum toning, otherwise Very Fine. | $750.00 SOLD |

CSA #1 Stone 1 Position 16
(4-Margin with a little light gum toning and a somewhat dry printing) USED tied to large
blue paper piece by the New
Orleans, La CDS 24 MAR (1862). On the piece is a blue double
oval handstamp from a New Orleans forwarding agent Ernest Quertica
& Co.
The piece with the forwarding agent's mark most likely comes from an
inbound Trans-Atlantic cover either through the blockade or more likely
around the blockade through Mexico. This is the only example of this
particular forwarding agent's mark that I have ever seen. Very Fine. The most likely scenario is that the cover originated in Europe (possibly in France) and was sent under separate cover with other letters to the forwarding agent in New Orleans. British Royal Mail steamers had regular runs to Tampico and Vera Cruz on the east coast of Mexico. Once in Mexico, the packet containing the letters addressed to the forwarding agent in New Orleans would enter Texas through Btrownsville and then very possibly went on to New Orleans via the Antonio Costa Express Service. Once in New Orleans, the forwarding agent would affix the CSA stamp and send the cover on to its final destination less than 500 miles from New Orleans. Without the full cover, this is speculation. But this is very likely what happened because that is how forwarding agents of the time operated, and going around the blockade to New Orleans via Royal Mail through Mexico and Texas was easier and more certain of delivery than trying to go through the blockade. |

CSA #1 Stone 2 USED (margin touches at the right and minor edge thins) canceled by an Arc Due 5 handstamp (traces of a town cancel can be seen on the stamp as well). Stamp was on a cover that was either underpaid or forwarded requiring that postage due be assessed, and the due mark was struck on the stamp perhaps because the town mark inadequately canceled the stamp. |

CSA #2 H&L Horz Pair and CSA #1 Stone 2 USED in combination and tied to a large piece and to each other with two partial strikes of the Chattanooga, Ten CDS 20 APR 1862. The postal use represents a 5x rate with the large piece containing part of an address “To the Adjutant General of Tennessee.” Most likely cut down from a large oversize envelope containing official documents. The CSA #1 stamp is 4-Margin although close at the top and the right and appears to be without faults and is plated as Stone 2 Position 49. The CSA #2 H&L Horz Pair (appears to be 4-Margin but the CSA #1 stamp slightly overlaps) has a top sheet margin and plates to Positions 6 and 7, but some faults are present. The right stamp has a slight surface scuff, and the left stamp also has a slight surface scuff and an apparent pre-affixing crease involving the lower left. Despite the faults, the item still has an overall Very Fine appearance (stamps affixed upside down with respect to each other) and represents a significantly scarce 5x rate combination use. | $750.00 |

CSA #2 H&L USED (stamp has pre-affixing damage and is missing the lower left corner) tied to small piece by the BLUE large single rim Norfolk, Va CDS 11 FEB 1862. Despite the stamp fault, the piece still has a nice appearance and is a rare item showing the Vertical Gutter. | $100.00 |

![]() CS02/327 ![]() | CSA #2 H&L USED Staggered Block of 7 (large margins on all sides) (top row of 4, bottom row of 3). Plated as Positions 33-36, 44-46. Tied to large blue paper piece by multiple strikes of the New Orleans, La CDS 1 APR (1862). The block has internal pre-affixing faults which do not detract from the overall appearance. In April 1862, the block paid a very large 14x rate for a large packet. The piece is linen lined which means it was a security packet made to send currency, bonds, or other important papers or documents. The linen lining prevented anyone from seeing through the paper packet. This is currently the largest recorded used block of the CSA #2 H&L stamp. There is also believed to be a used Strip of 7 whose current whereabouts is unknown to me. Ex-Seybold (John Friedrich Seybold 1857-1909 an early major collector) with his handstamp on the reverse. A great rarity of Confederate philately. | $3,500.00 |
