This document is searchable using your "Find" function. If you have a PC with Windows 95/98, hit CTRL-F and enter your selected keyword(s) to search the listing (e.g. Richmond). I am sure that a MAC has a similar function, but I do not know how it is accessed. Or you can use the database Search Engine below. Click CSA SEARCH for a short tutorial and explanation (opens in new window) of how best to use the Search Engine with my databases. The search will show results in both the CSA Postal History and CSA Stamp databases only. Search results automatically appear in a New Window.
So many of the CSA unused stamps are without gum, and many of the stamps
also have very tiny pinholes. The reasons behind this are due to the
collectors and the dealers of years past. Collectors of an earlier time
purposefully soaked the gum off the unused stamps to protect the stamps
from sticking and cracking. In the days before air-conditioners and climate
control, these collectors actually did us a great favor by doing this.
Otherwise we may not have these stamps to collect today because of the
generally very poor gum that was originally used. The small pinholes were
usually caused by the dealers of the late 19th century who had the habit of
displaying the stamps that they had for sale by pinning them with small
straight pins to cork bulletin boards in their shops. I wonder how the
collectors 100 years in the future will view our current methods of collecting
and preserving.
There are collectors that are interested only in original pristine full-
margined OG NH stamps. To these collectors, I wish you every success.
Occasionally, I do have such material listed. But please be advised that
OG Confederate Stamps (particularly CSA #7, #11, #12) will have gum
creases and cracks because of the generally poor condition of the gum to
begin with. This is an expected part of CSA collecting. To the collector
that is willing to temper history with condition, I know that you will be
greatly rewarded. To those of you that are interested only in gem "post
office fresh" condition material and not the history, then I apologize in
advance as I can only be of limited assistance as a complete CSA stamp
collection with such rigid criteria is essentially unobtainable.

The pair is 4-Margin with a small part of the imprint visible at the top. Plated as Pos 3-4. There is an extremely tiny corner crease at the upper left seen only from the back which does not in the least detract from an otherwise Very Fine appearance. Ex-Skinner. |
![]() | CSA #62x4 New Orleans Provisional 5c Red Brown on Bluish Paper USED Horz Pair with two full strikes of the “PAID” cancellation and also a partial strike of the New Orleans, La CDS (date not apparent). |
| CSA #62x3 5c Brown New Orleans Provisional on White Paper Vert Strip of 3 USED Plated as Positions 3, 11, 19 (4-Margin with small part of the imprint visible at the top) on small piece with three strikes of the “PAID” cancel and a bold and complete strike of the New Orleans, La CDS 9 AUG (1861). This piece was once part of a full cover with a fourth single stamp addressed to Hamburg SC (20c rate). But the 4th single stamp on the cover was a replacement and was not original to the cover. Therefore, the replaced stamp was removed and the cover converted to a large piece in order to preserve the used strip as used multiples higher than a pair of the New Orleans provisional stamps are very scarce. Accompanying this piece is a 2006 CSA certificate for the full cover showing this strip with the replaced stamp. The certificate also notes that the strip was lifted, the bottom stamp expertly repaired, and the strip replaced. The repair to the bottom stamp of the strip is so minor and so expertly done that it is almost undetectable. Truly a showpiece item as these used larger multiples are so extremely scarce. |

Most unusual to see pairs from these two different printings used together in combination to make a 4x rate. The Pairs are affixed at right angles to each other and slightly overlap but appear to have very decent margins, and no faults detected. Very Fine. |

![]() | CSA #1 USED Stone 2 (2 singles arranged to appear as a Vert Pair 4-Margin) on small piece with the Suffolk, Va CDS 30 MAR (1862). The lower stamp has what looks like a small stone flaw (very difficult to tell if such things are actual stone flaws or just a small scuff since stone flaws are so prevalent on these stamps). Very Fine appearance. |
![]() | CSA #1 USED Stone 2 (stamp is cut into a bit at the top) with a nice strike of the Southern Express Company Montgomery, Ala double ring CDS. There is also a little orange staining at the upper right corner which could be the remnants of another orange cancellation. These stamps showing an Express Mail cancellation are scarce. |
![]() | CSA #1 USED Stone 2 Horz Pair tied to small piece by the usual weak but recognizable strike of the Fredericksburg, Va CDS 4 APR (1862). Stamps are 4-Margin but a bit close on the left. Some minor edge gum toning. Nice looking piece. |
| CSA #1 Stone 2 USED (4-Margin but close top and left) tied on larger piece by the Blue Columbia SC CDS 21 FEB (1862) and also by the Black Winnsboro SC receiving Grid. Part of the address containing “Winnsboro” is present on the piece confirming the origin of the grid. Very slight edge gum toning at the upper right corner but otherwise a Very Fine appearance. |
| CSA #1 Stone 1 Vert Pair USED (4-Margin with parts of the two adjacent stamps visible on both sides of the upper stamp but a small horizontal scissors cut at the left edge between the stamps) tied to small piece by an excellent strike of the New Orleans, La CDS 7 FEB (1862). Very Fine. |

| CSA #1 Stone 2 USED (margin touches at right) with a neat strike of the Eagle Pass, Tex CDS with an AUG date. Stamp has a small sealed edge tear at the right center. Despite the stamp fault, this is quite a scarce Texas postmark. |
| CSA #1 Stone 2 USED (4-Margin and a very dry printing) with the small double circle New Orleans, La CDS (date not dully apparent). This is the scarce New Orleans River Mail postmark applied at the dock to incoming and outgoing river mail. Few shallow thins which are not noticeable and do not detract from an overall Very Fine appearance. |
| CSA #1 Stone 1 Plated as Position 9 USED (4-Margin Light Green) with a face free strike of the New Orleans double ring Southern Express Cancel. Very Fine. |

| CSA #2 Paterson USED (4-Margin) with an excellent strike of the Estelle Springs Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad oval postmark 19 APR 1863. The stamp has major faults with multiple thins and a large sealed tear at the upper left corner but still manages a Very Fine appearance. This stamp with a Railroad postmark is extremely scarce. |
| CSA #2 H&L Horz Pair USED (4-Margin) with two neat strikes of a MAY (1862) CDS identified only as “New - “ which I believe is most likely New Hope NC but I cannot guarantee this identification except to say that it is definitely not New Orleans, La or New Market, Va. Light horizontal crease across the top which does not at all detract from the overall appearance. Used pairs especially paying a 4x rate are scarce. |
| CSA #2 Paterson USED (almost 4-Margin but close at the bottom and just touching at the bottom left corner) with a very neat strike of a small RED CDS (-sville) not otherwise identified. Very Fine Appearance. |
| CSA #2 H&L Horz Pair USED tied to a small piece by two Target Cancels and a full strike of the Selma, Ala CDS 1 JUN (1862). Beautiful appearing pair with large margins all around and exhibiting a late and therefore somewhat worn impression. Extremely Fine. |
| CSA #2b Paterson USED (4-Margin and an unusually dark blue for a Peterson Print) Malformed “O” cataloged as Pos 25 and tied to small piece by the Warrington, Fla CDS 7 OCT (1862). Postmark dates the usage as after the fall of the Pensacola-Warrington area to the Union and identifies the stamp as Army usage from Pollard, Ala (Reference Page 170 Collector’s Guide to Confederate Philately). Extremely Fine. |
| CSA #2b Paterson Dark Blue USED (4-Margin) tied to large piece by the GREEN Greensborough NC CDS 11 OCT. The large piece is part of a folded letter on blue lined notebook paper with the full address to Mrs. P. D. Gates, Asheville, North Carolina. Extremely Fine. |
| CSA #2e Paterson Stone Y (4-Margin but close at the top) tied to small piece by the Salisbury NC CDS 6 OCT (1862). Minor edge gum toning, otherwise Very Fine |

| CSA #2e Paterson Stone Y USED (margin close on the left) tied to small orange paper piece by the Richmond, Va CDS 10 NOV (1862). Very Fine Appearance. |

| CSA #2b Paterson USED (4-Margin Dark Blue) tied to small brown paper piece by the Goodson, Va CDS (date not apparent) Very Fine. |
![]() ![]() | CSA #2a Paterson UNUSED (4-Margin Light Blue) Part OG with a light horz crease and small thins but a Very Fine appearance. PF Certificate 1981. |

![]() ![]() | CSA #2 H&L USED (4-Margin but a little close on the left) with an almost socked-on-the-nose strike of the Tudor Hall, Va CDS 25 DEC (1861) Christmas Day. Trivial edge thin otherwise Very Fine. Old owner’s / expertizer’s handstamps on the back. |

![]() ![]() | CSA #2 H&L Plated as Position 45 White Arrow which is a listed variety USED (4-margin) with the small double circle BLUE Portsmouth, Va CDS 15 MAR (1862) Very Fine. |
![]() ![]() | CSA #2 H&L Plated as Position 5 USED (4-Margin with a large top sheet margin) with a light town CDS not otherwise identified. Significant thins but still an Extremely Fine appearance with very large margins. |
![]() ![]() | CSA #2 Paterson Horz Pair UNUSED (4-Margin) Part OG with shallow hinge thins but still an overall Extremely Fine appearance. |
![]() ![]() | CSA #2 Paterson Stone Y USED (4-Margin with a right sheet margin) tied to small piece by the Richmond, Va CDS Powell Type 3g 30 OCT 1862. Very Fine. |
![]() ![]() | CSA #2 Paterson USED with an excellent strike of the Warrington, Fla CDS 10 NOV 1862. The stamp itself is faulty but it has been expertly rebacked to a Very Fine appearance for preservation. But it is not so much the stamp as the usage which is the most important. The Warrington Pensacola, Fla area was occupied by the Union in MAY 1862. It is known that the Warrington, Fla postmaster fled with the cancelling device and settled in Pollard, Ala. He continued to service mail from Pollard, Ala using the Warrington, Fla postmark at least until near the end of 1862 and possibly into 1863. Covers and stamps with the Warrington, Fla postmark used from Pollard, Ala after the fall of Warrington-Pensacola in their own right are scarce. |
![]() ![]() | CSA #2 H&L Horz Pair and CSA #1 Stone 2 USED in combination and tied to a large piece and to each other with two partial strikes of the Chattanooga, Ten CDS 20 APR 1862. The usage represents a 5x rate with the large piece containing part of an address “To the Adjutant General of Tennessee.” Most likely cut down from a large oversize envelope containing official documents. The CSA #1 stamp is 4-Margin although close at the top and the right and appears to be without faults and is plated as Stone 2 Position 49. The CSA #2 H&L Horz Pair (appears to be 4-Margin but the CSA #1 stamp slightly overlaps) has a top sheet margin and plates to Positions 6 and 7, but some faults are present. The right stamp has a slight surface scuff, and the left stamp also has a slight surface scuff and an apparent pre-affixing crease involving the lower left. Despite the faults, the item still has an overall Very Fine appearance (stamps affixed upside down with respect to each other) and represents a significantly scarce 5x rate combination usage. |
| CSA #3 USED (4-Margin but a bit close at top right and some very minor edge toning at top) San Antonio, Tex CDS. Small thins and a minor crease which do not visibly detract from an overall very neat appearance. This stamp with Texas usage is SCARCE. CSA Certificate 1994. |
| CSA #3 UNUSED (4-Margin) Part OG LH. Hinge Thins but still a Very Fine appearance. |
| CSA #3 Block of 4 UNUSED (4-Margin) No Gum with a very light vertical crease at the left not noticeable from the front. Very scarce larger multiple of this stamp with an exceptionally fine appearance. The fact that the gum was removed some time in the past has actually helped to preserve the block in this condition as the very poor stone lithograph gum will with time cause significant damage to the stamp if not well cared for. |
| CSA #3 UNUSED (4-Margin Dark Green) Part OG LH Very Fine. |
| CSA #3 Horz Pair USED (margin touches at upper left corner) tied to a small piece by the Salisbury NC CDS (date not fully apparent). Space on the piece around the stamps on both sides indicate that this pair was not cut from a strip of five but most likely represents the double circular rate, Very scarce used pair. CSA Cert 2005 which identifies the stamps as Yellow-Green. |
![]() ![]() | CSA #3 UNUSED (4-Margin) Original Gum Lightly Hinged with the color dot in the right margin which occurs between Positions 4-5 (54-55) and identifies the stamp as Position 4 (54). Small thins and a light crease at the top but still an excellent position stamp with an overall Extremely Fine appearance. |
