CSA #62x3 New Orleans 5c Brown Provisional USED (clipped lower left corner) with the RED small double circle New Orleans River Mail CDS. The date appears to by 11 JUN (1861) which would make this an Earliest Known Use predating the Scott listed date of 12 JUN 1861 by one day. Only a small handful of off-cover provisional stamps are recorded with this scarce red river mail postmark as it was struck in red only for a very limited two week period in mid-June 1861. Believed to have been used by Postmaster Riddell himself. |
