CSA #6 USED Single Use Prior to the Rate Change (margin just in at lower left but with a large left sheet margin) tied to small piece by the Atlanta, Ga CDS 2 JUN (1862). The contains the “Confederate States of America Executive Department Official Business” imprint (ED-04). The stamp is affixed over “Official Business” indicating private use. Most unusual for a CSA Executive Department cover to be used outside of Richmond. Unfortunate that this is a piece only and not the full cover. $250.00

The stamps look very much like London Print stamps, but the two right stamps have multiple ink splatters around the portrait which do not occur in London Print stamps and also has the heavy yellow Richmond gum somewhat unevenly distributed. This is the smaller 29 mm pre-war Charleston postmark that was used only very rarely in the Confederate Period. The bottom stamp has a filled frame at the bottom. Very Fine. $100.00

CSA #7 London De La Rue Paper Block of 4 UNUSED (4-Margin with left and lower sheet margins from the lower left corner of the pane) OG NH (usual gum creases most prominent in the lower sheet margin). The block was cut in such a way that parts of the five adjacent stamps are visible at the top and the right. I do not recommend cutting blocks in this fashion as a misguided attempt at possible grading because of the willful destruction of the perfectly good adjacent stamps. $125.00

The only difference is that this block has the heavy, streaky, discolored Richmond gum rather than the thin London gum. The gum is the only way to properly identify this block. Very Fine. $100.00

CSA #7 Horz Pair USED (margin in at the bottom but with a right sheet margin tied to large piece by two strikes of the Bumpass VA C RR  (Virginia Central Railroad) CDS 1 MAR. The large piece contains the full address to William Jerdone Esqr, Charles City Court House, Virginia. Excellent strikes of the railroad postmark.

William Jerdone (1805-1865) was a very wealthy planter who owned the James River plantation known as Mount Stirling (Sterling) in Charles City County. The plantation mansion that he built in 1851 still stands as a designated Virginia historical landmark but remains as a private residence.
