Fabricated Postmark

New Orleans 2c Red Provisional

The stamp is a genuine New Orleans 2c Red Provisional of the type used on drop letters in late 1861. This is a very expensive stamp on cover. However, even though the stamp is genuine and so is the large piece to which it is affixed, the New Orleans postmark is a complete fabrication. An example of the correct CSA New Orleans postmark used in late 1861 is illustrated below.
