VAPEX 2007 9-11 NOV 2007

17 NOV 2007 -- The 2007 CONFEDERATE STAMP ALLIANCE Convention was held 9-11 NOV 2006 in Williamsburg, Va in conjunction with the VAPEX 2007 show. The 62nd Southern Supper was held Friday 9 NOV 2007 at the Shields Tavern in historic Colonial Williamsburg and was extremely well attended by CSA members and guests. Many thanks to Schuyler Rumsey Auctions and Siegel Auction Galleries for sponsoring the open bar during the social hour preceding the banquet. Additional thanks to Phil Warman and John L. Kimbrough MD for sponsoring the traditional CSA Hospitality Room during the convention. Special thanks to Peter Powell and Chuck Hanselmann who arranged the convention and acted as the convention hosts. CSA President Col Jim Monroe presided at the Southern Supper. The following awards were presented --

  • The CSA Trophy was presented to Col Leonard H. Hartmann for his exhibit on the CSA Stone Lithographs.
  • The Haydn-Meyer Award for Service was presented to Col Ed Joyce.
  • The CP Writer's Award was presented to Gen John L. Kimbrough MD for his article on the CSA Patriotic Trans-Atlantic Covers.
  • The August Dietz Award for research and publishing was not presented this year..

CSA members exhibited a fabulous range of material (both CSA and non-CSA) at the show and received the following awards --

  • "Confederate Generals' Mail" - Brian, Maria, and Alexander Green -- Brian and Maria Green Award and APS Vermeil Medal.
  • "The Lithographed General Issues of the Confederate States of America, the Stamps" - Leonard H. Hartmann - CSA Trophy, Jack E. Molesworth Memorial Award, and APS Gold Medal.
  • "Advertising Covers in the Confederacy" - Larry Baum - President's Trophy and APS Gold Medal.
  • Mobile, Alabama - The Introduction of Stamps" - Van Koppersmith - APS Gold Medal.
  • "Mobile, Alabama Outside of the Union - Van Koppersmith - Robert A. Siegel Memorial Award, APS Gold Medal, and the Show Grand Award.
  • "Confederate States Navy" (one frame) - James Monroe - The General's Award and APS Silver Medal.
  • "Patriotic Covers and Lettersheets Used by the Confederacy" (one frame) - Chuck Hanselmann - APS Silver-Bronze Medal.
  • "Columbus, Georgia in the Confederacy" - Frank Crown - APS Silver Medal.
  • "Independent State and Confederate Mail of North Carolina" - Tony Crumbley - William G. Bogg Memorial Award and APS Gold Medal.
  • "Confederate Postmasters Provisionals" - Peter Powell - John H. Reagan Award and APS Vermeil Medal.
  • "Confederate States: Texas Manuscript Town Cancels" (one frame) - Tom Richards - Trustee's Trophy and APS Silver-Bronze Medal.
  • "Antebellum Virginia 1851-1861" (one frame) - Gene Lightfoot - APS Silver-Bronze Medal.
  • "Postwar Charlottesville, Virginia: the 1865 Straightlines" (one frame) - Gene Lightfoot - APS Silver Bronze Medal.
  • "Union Patriotic Labels" (one frame) - Art Groton - APS Silver Medal.

The Annual General Membership Business Meeting was held Saturday 10 NOV 2007 with President Col Jim Monroe presiding. The full report of the General Membership Meeting will appear in the next issue of the Confederate Philatelist in accordance with the By-Laws.

A new slate of officers will take office 1 JAN 2008. The new officers will be --

  • President - Trish Kaufmann
  • Vice President - Van Koppersmith
  • Treasurer - Robert L. Frailey
  • Secretary - Richard Murphy
  • Trustees -- Steven Walske, Deane Briggs, Phil Warman, Tom Royster
