CSA #4 Stone 2 Position 50 (100) USED (4-Margin with a small lower sheet margin) with manuscript cancel "S C" for "South Carolina." Affixed to a large green paper piece with the address to Cadet O. Sheppard, Citadel, Charleston, So. Ca. Part of the manuscript postal marking is on the piece to the left of the stamp and can be identified as "Longmires Store" (Edgefield District SC) with an "Aug" date. Very Fine stamp on a piece associated with a Citadel Cadet.
Orlando
Sheppard (1844-1929) from Edgefield District SC was an 1865 graduate of
the Citadel and an attorney by profession. Beginning in 1863, he served
as a Sergt in Co B of the SC Citadel Cadets Infantry.
After the war he practiced as an attorney in Edgefield District SC. He
was an active member of the Ancient Free Masons of South Carolina and
was elected Grand Master of the Masons of South Carolina in 1899 and
again in 1900. His younger brother was John Calhoun Sheppard
(1850-1931) a prominent South Carolina politician who served as
Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina (1882-1886) and Governor of South
Carolina in 1886 when the sitting governor resigned to accept a cabinet
position in Washington DC. |
