CSA #2 H&L USED Staggered Block of 7 (large margins on all sides) (top row of 4, bottom row of 3). Plated as Positions 33-36, 44-46. Tied to large blue paper piece by multiple strikes of the New Orleans, La CDS
1 APR (1862). The block has internal pre-affixing faults which do not
detract from the overall appearance. In April 1862, the block paid a
very large 14x rate for a large packet. The piece is linen lined which
means it was a security packet made to send currency, bonds, or other
important papers or documents. The linen lining prevented anyone from
seeing through the paper packet. This is currently the largest recorded used block of the CSA #2 H&L stamp.
There is also believed to be a used Strip of 7 whose current
whereabouts is unknown to me. Ex-Seybold (John Friedrich Seybold
1857-1909 an early major collector) with his handstamp on the reverse.
A great rarity of Confederate philately. |
