(margin touches at the left) tied to large blue paper piece by the
Savannah, Geo PAID CDS 18 MAR (1862). The large piece contains the full
Military Address to Lieut C. H. M. Howell Care Capt Moseley, Waynesville, Ga. Very clean large piece.
Charles
Henry Millhouse Howell (1860-1883) is listed on the Federal Census of
1860 as a relatively prosperous farmer who owned 17 slaves in Lowndes
County, Georgia. He entered service as a a 1st Lieut in Co G 26th Ga Inf
9/21/1861 and was elected Captain 5/8/1862. He spent much of his
service time absent due to sickness and resigned 12/20/1862 for reasons
of health and returned home where he continued farming for the
remainder of his life.
Benjamin Felix Moseley (1826-1897) was the Captain of Co G 26th Ga Inf
but failed re-election 5/8/1862 (replaced by Lieut Howell) and dropped
from the rolls. He had later service beginning 8/19/1864 as a private
(later promoted 1st Lieut) in Pruden's Battery Light Artillery
which was a state unit formed in 1864 to guard Milledgeville, the
Georgia State capital. The Moseley family was apparently a large land
owning family in Georgia at this time. |
