UNION USAGE OF CSA PATRIOTIC

12 - STARS **

The above cover was captured on the battlefied of Hanover on 27 MAY 1862. The enclosed letter describes how the soldier found the cover and the lettersheet intact and unused with the Confederate stamp already affixed. The soldier then used the lettersheet and the cover to write a letter home. After applying a Federal stamp, the cover was posted through Union occupied Old Point Comfort, Va and delivered to Grand Rapids, Michigan. A faded pencil notation across the top of the cover indicates that this was indeed a captured piece and not Confederate usage so that the United States Postal Service would deliver the item. The endorsement reads "Captured on the Battle field of Hanover May 27th 1862 by G. B. Clark Co C 1st R U.S.S.S. (United States Sharpshooters)."
