In the Confederacy, forwarding was not free. Forwarded covers were assessed the additional postage and marked "Due" as the forwarding fee was to be collected from the addressee.

Handstamp "PAID 10" and Forwarded "Due 5"

Initial delivery to Leesburg, Va traveled more than 500 miles accounting for the "PAID 10" rate. The cover was then forwarded to Waterford, Va and assessed an additional 5c as "Due 5" to pay the forwarding fee of less than 500 miles. These marks indicate that the cover must have been posted between 3 JUL 1861 (the date of the 11-Star flag) and 30 JUN 1862.
