$100.00 Note
(Train with
Diffuse Steam and Milkmaid) Subtype Cr-298, Paterson Ac, Small letter
below A, No Watermark. Interest PAID at Richmond backstamp 1864. On the
back is printed ad "Write to J. H. Childrey, 1722 Main St., Richmond,
Va. Confederate Money, Stamps, Bonds, Coins, &c." VF-XF.
Right
after the war, Confederate money was plentiful and worthless with only
a nominal value as a souvenir. Different merchants often put
advertisements on the blank backs of Confederate notes. Most of these
notes with advertisements have been lost over the years. John Howard
Childrey (1842-1898) was a Richmond druggist in the years after the war
who also dabbled in coins, currency, and stamps. His post-war printed
advertisements are found on several different Confederate period
obsolete notes. He entered service as a private in Co B 1st Va Inf
4/21/1861 and was discharged for disability 1/28/1864. He is buried in
Richmond in the Hollywood Cemetery in Section C Lot 55. |
