Colt First Model Dragoon 1848
- Serial #5335 (Serial Number Range 1341-8000).
- 7 1/2" Part Round and Part Octagonal Barrel, .44 Caliber 6 shot cylinder percussion.
- "Dragoon" comes from the name of a heavily armed mounted soldier. This revolver is much too large and heavy to have been worn as a sidearm. They were most commonly carried as a pair in holsters mounted across the horses neck. Hence another term sometimes used "Horse Pistol" referring to a handgun carried on the horse and not as a sidearm.
- Production of this model began in 1848 and ended in 1850. Colt Dragoon Revolvers did see service in the Mexican War.
