Ever wonder about the contents of the Confederate Post Office semi-official envelopes? Yes, it was official correspondence from the Department to the postmasters throughout the South. But there are few extant examples of envelope and its contents. Here is an example that was recently featured on eBay, the interent auction site.
The envelope, a bit doggy from years of neglect, is from the Appointment Bureau. The cover was postmarked at Richmond, Virginia, in November 1861, and is addressed to an individual in Carthage, Tennessee. The contents? An official appointment signed by Reagan {CSA Postmaster General John H. Reagan} - making one James Fisher the new Carthage Postmaster.
