It was about three years ago that I purchased for my exhibit a strip of three Confederate 2c red Jackson stamps (Figure 1 below). The only reason I purchased them was that they were canceled with the straight line ARMY of TENN handstamp and would be a fine addition to my exhibit. At the time I was certain that they must have been separated from a strip of five, paid the ten cent rate, and were on cover.

At STAMPSHOW 2003 I came upon a "piece" with a pair of the same stamp with the same cancel. With much hope, but little expectation, I purchased the item and proceeded to compare the edges and cancels with the illustration in A Collector's Guide to Confederate Philately. It looked very close. On arriving home I soaked the stamps off the piece (oh yes, I retained it) and proceeded to lay them edge to edge. Lo & behold it was a perfect match! (see Figure 2 below).

The piece is a portion of a turned cover and as an added bonus it has "Dietz" in very small letters on the reverse. Of course only a portion of the two addresses are there. On the stamp side it reads "Lea Peterson.../ells PO." On the inside it reads ".../ez Peterson, Dalton, Ga." This is the largest multiple with the ARMY of TENN cancel recorded at this time.
