The Missing "Advertised" Cover from Danville, Virginia

Victor Lord Denovan

This article is from the July - September 2005 issue of the Confederate Philatelist. Posted under a prior agreement with the then journal editors in effect since the early days of this website.

I recently acquired an "Advertised" cover which at the time was purchased only on the basis that I did not have an example in my collection.

Imagine my surprise on rechecking General Peter W.W. Powell's book Missent, Forwarded and Advertised Markings Used in the Confederate States of America - under Danville, Va -- 2 Missent, I Forwarded and I Free illustrated, together with the last paragraph (page 30) stating that he had "never seen an advertised cover used from Danville but with two sets of markings I'm sure there had to be one, but none have survived."

Was this perhaps the only known one lying waiting to be discovered? On the advice of both Col. Larry Baum and Col. James Monroe, I contacted General Peter Powell and forwarded a coloured scan of the cover.

It is a Lady's embossed cover with a pair of Scott CSA #7 tied with the circular date stamp of Culpeper C.H. Va. and dated Nov. 24 and addressed to 'Mr. Joseph A. Jeffries, Danville, Va. The cover shows the ADVERTISED marking in blue.

As a relative "new boy" to the CSA, I am indeed delighted to have discovered and acquired such a "find" and to add to our knowledge of these elusive markings.
