VA3403 Stampless PAID cover with the BLACK Danville, Va CDS  2 OCT (1861) and handstamp PAID 10 with postmaster's intials (WBP) in the upper right corner above the handstamp rate. It has long been recognized that the Danville postmaster at this time, William B. Payne, prepared some provisional covers rated both 5c and 10c using his initials as the control mark. This particular cover is listed in the Provisional Section of the CSA Catalog as DAN-VA-E05 Type F with the control initials. The cover is not exactly listed in Scott in this configuration but can be considered as a variation of Scott CSA #21XU7 with the initials -- the variation being the PAID handstamp in an oval. This cover is listed on the Calhoun Census of Danville Provisional Covers published in 2011 and on the Crown Census of Danville Provisional Covers found on the Civil War Philatelic Society website. The cover is a folded bluelined notebook page, but there is no letter. Addressed to Mrs. J. H. Owen Care Messrs Woodward Porter & White, Selma, Ala. Old pencil arithmetic on the reverse. Very Fine appearance Ex-Caspary, Ex-Robert W. Wiseman. $1,000.00
