VA3399 CSA #6 Single Use Prior to the Rate Change (margin a little tight on the left) tied by the Richmond, Va Powell Type 3a 28 MAY 1862. Official POD Imprinted Cover "Confederate States of America Post Office Department, Official Business. Chief of the Appointment Bureau." Unsigned with the stamp and postmark placed over the imprint indicating private use. Addressed to Peyton Graveley Esqr, Leatherwoods Store, Henry Co., Va. minor cover wrinkling which does not detract. Very clean cover.

The Graveley family of Henry County, Virginia, was a prosperous farming family. Peyton Benjamin Graveley (1835-1915) began service as a Sergeant 4/9/1861 in the Virginia Danville Artillery. On 1/29/1862 he mustered into Co F 42nd Va Inf as a 1st Lieut and promoted Capt 1/1/1863. He is listed as wounded three times (Gettysburg 7/3/1863, The Wilderness 5/5/1864, Fisher's Hill 9/22/1864). No further record after 2/15/1865. After the war, he returned to farming in Henry County.
