CDS Powell Type 6i 12 JAN (1864). Small signature in the right upper
corner "M R H Garnett M C (Member of Congress)"
is that of Muscoe Russell Hunter Garnett a member of the First
Confederate Congress representing Virginia. There are not many
covers signed by a Confederate Congressman in office since they did not
have the free franking privilege and had to pay the regular postage.

Muscoe
Russell Hunter Garnett (1821-1864), a graduate of the University of
Virginia and a lawyer by profession in Loretto, Virginia, was active in
politics. He served in the Virginia House of delegates (1854-1856), the
US House of Representatives (1856-1861), attended the Virginia
Secession Convention, and was elected to the First Confederate Congress
(1862-1864) dying of Typhoid Fever while in office as a
Confederate Congressman. He was related to CSA

Richard Garnett killed at Gettysburg (Picket's Charge). M.R.H. Garnett
was a nephew of R.M.T. Hunter, the first CSA Secretary of State
and a Confederate Senator. |
