USA #26 tied to cover by the BLUE small double circle Norfolk, Va CDS
MAY 1861. The year date is in the CDS. The day logo is unclear, but
what little there is of it indicates a two digit date most likely
beginning with "2" which would make the cover USA Used in CSA Virginia as
Virginia joined the CSA 7 MAY 1861. Addressed to Edward Wood Esqr,
Eadenton, Chowan Co., NC. Front of the cover used for a bit of
arithmetic, part of top back flap missing, and a little period ink
smear at the bottom of the address. Still a clean appearing and
presentable cover.
Edward Wood (1820-1872) was a very prominent
planter, businessman, and fishery operator in Chowan County, North
Carolina. He is listed as owning 46 Slaves on the Federal Slave Census
of 1860, but inherited many more slaves and plantations during the war.
North Carolina officially emancipated the slaves in the state on 4 DEC
1865, but many of the slaves remained on the plantations as
sharecroppers. By the time of his death in 1872 at the age of 51,
Edward Wood owned 9 plantations. |
