CSA
#11c Greenish-Blue (stamp affixed upside down 4-Margin but
tight on the stamp's left side) tied to cover by the Wytheville,
Va CDS 27 APR (1864). The stamp is affixed over the
embossing of the 1c Blue Star Die envelope. The
blue rim of the star die can be seen to the right of the stamp.
Addressed to J. J. Percival, Oil Mill, Speedwell, Va. The address is
unusual. There was no community in Virginia known as "Oil Mill" so must
have been a local name. Speedwell is not a county name but a
listed post office in Wythe County only about 15 miles from
Wytheville.
Joshua J. Percival (1809-1884), the addressee, manufactured
iron in
Speedwell. One back flap replaced. Cover with a very clean overall
appearance. The 1c Blue Star Die envelope used in the CSA as
an
Adversity Cover is a significant rarity as there are only a small handful of these
covers recorded with adversity use.
Turned cover
with a CSA #7 stamp (replaced and not original to the
cover) with a
Wytheville, Va postmark addressed to Richmond, Va. The inside use is
undated. The cover has not been flapped or folded out for display. |
