Stampless
PAID cover with a partial strike of the Richmond,
Va CDS Powell Type 2a 13 AUG 1861 and handstamp PAID
2 Type B and also with a large manuscript "2"
which is quite unusual for Richmond. From the Alexander H. Stephens
Correspondence and posted to the Vice-President as a Richmond
Drop Letter. Secretarial summary on the back "Wm R.
Holmes "Camp Georgia" Richmond Aug 11th recommends Mr. Carter as one
who has a talent for "military sciences."
Top back flap is missing as is uusal for the Stephens Correspondence,
and a little lower edge toning apparent on the back only. Otherwise a
clean appearing cover and a nice drop letter postal use.
"Camp
Georgia" was not the name of an official military camp near Richmond
but was most likely a local name given to a camp which was used by
Georgia soldiers sent to Virginia. William R. Holmes (1821-1862), at
the time of this cover, was the Captain of Co D 2nd Ga Inf
and
promoted Lt Col of the regiment in Apr 1862. Lt Col Holmes was
Killed-in-Action at Sharpsburg (Antietam) 9/17/1862. According to the
regimental roster, there was a Pvt E. A. Carter in Co D and would most
likely be the one Capt Holmes was referring to with his recommendation
to the Vice-President. The only thing on Pvt Carter's record, other
than his enlistment in April 1861, is that he was discharged for
disability 8/20/1862. |
