Stampless Paid cover with the Churchland, Va (Norfolk County) CDS 24 DEC (1861) and handstamp PAID 10 Type C all in RED (double rate over 500 miles). Addressed to Mrs. Jno R. Binion, Island Creek PO, Hancock (County), Ga. Minor reduction on the left where opened, otherwise Very Fine. The addressee appears to be the wife of Captain John Robert Binion (1819-1887) a wealthy planter of Hancock County, Georgia who lived in Island Creek. There are references to his being an officer in the Confederate Army, but there is no record of a John R. Binion having served in the Confederate Army. So the rank that he is listed with was either a state rank or a prior rank or honorary rank not related to the Confederate Army. And he had no sons of an age to have served in the army. So the sender of the cover is not identified.
