Small but complete commercially made lady's type cover with embossed
flowers on the back flap. Late postal use into the Siege of Petersburg.
Minor back flap sealed opening tear, otherwise Very Fine.
1st Lieut Robert G. Cross (1833-1906) was the regimental adjutant for the 44th Ten Inf consolidated with the 55th Ten Inf from Shiloh through the Siege of Petersburg to the surrender. The 44th Ten Inf further consolidated with the 25th Ten Inf in
October 1863. He is listed as wounded at Petersburg but no details
given. After the war, he lived in various places in Tennessee. He was
born in England but is buried in the Chattanooga Confederate Cemetery. |
