paper cover addressed to Hon William A. Graham, Hillsboro, N. Carolina.
William Alexander Graham (1804-1875) was a very prominent NC politician
and held many offices including United States Senator from NC
1840-1843, Governor of NC 1845-1849, Secretary of the Navy 1849-1852,
candidate for vice-president as Winfield Scott's running mate in the
election of 1852 (they lost), and a senator from NC 1864-1865 in the
Second Confederate Congress. Several navy ships were named after him as
was Graham County NC and the town of Graham NC. He had several sons who
served in NC units during the war. Cover most likely sent by one of his
sons in the ANV home to his father. |
