The
CSA Designation "Army of the Potomac" was short lived under the command
of Gen Beauregard and then Gen Johnston. Its only major action was the
Battle of First Manassas. The CSA Army of the Potomac was
renamed the Army of Northern Virginia in early 1862. Gen Lee took
command of the Army of Northern Virginia on 6/1/1862.
The sender of the cover was Lucien Barnsley (1840-1892) who enlisted as a private in Co A 8th Ga Inf
5/18/1861. He was still present for duty in November 1864, but no
further record after that time. In 1867, he was one of thousands of
ex-Confederate soldiers who emigrated to Brazil where he spent the rest
of his life and is buried in Sao Paulo. The addressee was Pvt
Barnsley's sister, Julia Bernard Barnsley (1836-1899) in care of their
father Godfrey Barnsley Sr (1805-1873), a very wealthy businessman and
cotton broker who lost much of his fortune during the war. His estate
northwest of Atlanta near Adairsville, Georgia, was virtually destroyed
by Sherman's army in 1864. |
