Turned Cover - First Use: CSA #12 (AD) (4-Margin) tied by the black Danville, Va CDS 5 SEP (1864) addressed to Mr. James P. Fleshman, Evergreen, Appomattox, Virginia. Second Use: CSA #12 (AD) (margin a little irregular at the right with manuscript postal marking "Evergreen Va Oct 12th 1864." Obscure
postal use from Appomattox County. The manuscript ties the stamp
with
the light "1864" on the stamp. Addressed to Stephen L. Pankey,
Irisburg, Virginia. Also tying the stamp of the second use is the black
Danville, Va CDS 27 OCT (1864). It
looks as though the cover made its way somehow back to Danville from
Irisburg and was used a third time from Danville to the same addressee
in Irisburg, and the sender got away with illegally reusing the stamp
as the light cancellation was evidently not noticed by the Danville
postmaster. James Paschal Leigh Fleshman (1847-1922) had service in the
20th Va Battalion Heavy Artillery. Stephen Lafayette Pankey (1836-1886) had service as a private in Co F 16th Va Inf before
being commissioned 2nd Lieut 9/3/1862. He is listed as captured as a
POW at Crampton's Gap MD 9/14/1862 and confined at Fort Delaware until
exchanged 10/2/1862. He resigned 2/9/1863. Very interesting triple use
cover which has been completely opened so both sides can be viewed. |
