CSA #1 Stone 2 (not plated) affixed upside down (margin in at left and edge gum toning) pen-cancelled and matching manuscript "Wellville Va Mar 13 (1862)" at the upper left. Obscure postal use from Nottoway County. Wellville was also a stop on the Southside Railroad. Military Address to Lieut J. Y. Phillips Care of Capt H. D. Dickerson, Williamsburg, Va. Joseph Y. Phillips (1840-1911) entered service as 2nd Lieutenant of Co C 53rd Va Inf on 8/12/1861. He was discharged 5/5/1862 when he failed re-election and had later service in Montague's Battalion Va Inf.
Henry D. Dickerson (1829-1876) was the company commander and was also
discharged on 5/5/1862 when he failed re-election and had later service
in the 18th Va Inf. Small commercially made lady's type cover with embossed flowers on the back flap. Very clean cover. |
