CSA #2 H&L (faulty) tied by the Richmond, Va
CDS Powell Type 3a 28 DEC 18961. Folded Letter complete addressed to
Mrs. Mary Ashley Elhart, Oak Dale, Rockbridge Co., Va Care of R. G.
Campbell. The letter is from Captain (later Major) Aldolphus Elhart to
his wife. Adolphus Elhart (1830-1913), an Austrian born merchant from
Lexington, Virginia, was at the time of this letter the AQM and
Paymaster of the 1st Division of the CSA Army of the Potomac. He began
service in the 1st Va Cav in
April 1861. His competency as a staff officer was rewarded with ever
increasing responsibilty as he was personally chosen by General
Stonewall Jackson himself to be his personal Paymaster in July 1862 and
later Paymaster for the entire 2nd Corps ANV, a position that he held
until the end of the war. This is a remarkable lengthy two page
letter from Capt Elhart to his wife detailing a trip to Richmond on
paymaster duties including picking up $77,000.00 in cash from the
Treasury Department. Have not seen another letter anywhere like this
concerning paymaster duties. Typed transcript of the letter included. |
