CSA #26 tied by the Richmond, Va CDS Powell Type 1a 15 MAY 1861 (year date in the CDS) which falls in the very limited USA Used in the CSA period for Virginia (5/7/1861-5/31/1861). Addressed to J. C. Gordon, Assistant Surgeon, Norfolk, Va. John Churchill Gordon (1831-1919) obtained medical degrees from both the University of Virginia and the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. In June 1861, he was appointed Assistant Surgeon of the 38th Va Inf but resigned in November 1861. He spent the next 50 years practicing medicine in Albemarle County. Very Fine Cover. Ex-Thayer.
