Stampless PAID 5c handstamp
with the small double circle Norfolk,
Va CDS all in BLUE
25 APR
1862. Manuscript “Exd”
and
“Postage inside” on the face of the cover indicating that
this is a Civilian
Through-the-Lines Cover
(inside envelope which also apparently contained a coin to pay the CSA
postage) from the well-known Middleton Correspondence addressed to Miss
Harriett Middleton Care of Henry A. Middleton, Charleston, South
Carolina. No indication where in the North the cover
originated as the
enclosure is not present. But the Middleton family had
relatives and
business interests in Rhode Island. Very late cover coming
through
Norfolk as the city was Union occupied beginning 9 MAY
1862. Cover
slightly reduced at the top not affecting anything and with a very
light stain at the lower right. Cover still maintains a very
clean
appearance. Cover has a 2009 CSA Certificate (05404) which is now
separated from the cover but a record of the certificate is in the
CSAAS archives. An unofficial copy of the certificate is included. |
