Davidson Attorney at Law, Lexington, Va."
Addressed to Mrs. J. D. Davidson, Care Mason Matthews Esq, Lewisburg,
(West) Virginia. Printer's imprint on the backflap "Rcot. Anthony & Co 10
Nassau Street N. Y." Clean cover with
just a little edge wear at the upper left and a back flap opening
tear. Brian Green Certificate 1989 in which he
states that in his opinion this is a provisional use. According to
current knowledge, that statement cannot be proven. Ex-Bogg.
Greenlee Davidson (1834-1863) was from a prominent
Virginia family. In
1861, he was serving as an ADC to Virginia CSA Governor John Letcher
with the Virginia state rank of Lt Col of Cavalry. He later entered
regular service as Captain of the Letcher
Artillery
in Stonewall Jackson’s corps and was killed-in-action at
Chancellorsville in May 1863. The advertising cover is from the
addressee's law practice office in Lexington. The addressee was
Greenlee Davidson's mother, Mrs. James Dorman Davidson (Hannah Greenlee
1812-1889). The sender of the cover is not identified. |
