CSA #6 Single use prior to the rate change (margin close on the left) tied by the Harrisonburg, Va CDS 31 MAY (1862). Coarse brown paper cover addressed to Mr. Wm H. Dennis, Coles Ferry, Charlotte, Va with routing via Charlottesville and Lynchburg. Military endorsement at upper right “J. M. Dennis Assist Surgeon 23rd Va Regt.” Minor reduction on the right not affecting anything, otherwise a Very Fine Cover. Jacob Morton Dennis was commissioned Asst Surgeon 5/16/1861. He is listed as captured as a POW at Sharpsburg 9/17/1862 and was confined briefly at Fort McHenry until his parole. He was promoted Surgeon 2/27/1863. After the war, he was known to have been practicing medicine in Kentucky as late as 1898.
