CDS 23 MAR (1865). Late use from the Siege of Petersburg. Addressed to
Miss Evellan Coggin, Hunsackers Store, Montgomery County NC. This cover
was most likely sent by a North Carolina soldier home to a friend or
relative as a number of soldiers named Coggin from Montgomery County
were in service in the Army of Northern Virginia in various NC
regiments. Very Fine Cover.
The addressee’s brother (he could not have sent this cover)
was 3rd Lieut Jeremiah Coggin of Co C 23rd NC Inf.
Lieut Coggin was wounded at Seven Pines (5/31/1862), wounded again at
Sharpsburg (9/17/1862), and captured as a POW at Gettysburg (7/1/1863).
He was confined at Fort Delaware, Johnsons Island, Point Lookout, and
Fort Delaware a second time before being transferred to South Carolina
and then Fort Pulaski as one of the
“Immortal 600.” Lieut Coggin Died of Disease during his
third confinement at Fort Delaware 3/12/1865. |
