11 NOV 1861. Addressed to Col Henry Stokes, Prince Ed CH, Va. Folded
letter sheet which appears to be homemade with a very short letter “Jno
Keys, Col Moon has been telegraphed to Wytheville, no guns or
ammunition here. W. King Hershell.” Col Henry Stokes, the addressee,
was a prominent citizen of Prince Edward County. The “Col” title was
honorary. At the beginning of the war, he held a position as a “bonded
farmer” whose duty was to gather and furnish supplies for the army. No
information on the other names mentioned. Cover is very clean
with a sealed backflap opening tear. |
