CSA #11 (AD)
(4-Margin) canceled by the Richmond,
Va Large Grid and addressed locally as an Overpaid Drop Letter
to John C. Rutherfoord, Richmond, Va. The cover is dated in Sept 1863
by period docketing at the left. John C. Rutherfoord (1825-1866) was a
member of the Virginia House of Delegates representing Goochland
County. This Richmond Large Grid (10 Bars) is very distinctive
(described as a bar grid within a circle) and is a pre war mark that
was only very rarely used in the Confederate period. Currently there
are believed to be only five or six covers recorded showing CSA use
of this large grid. Three of the recorded covers including this cover
have the grid canceling a stamp. Of the known covers, this is the only
one with the grid used on a drop letter. The others show the grid
obliterating a rate applied in error. There may be some others as yet
unrecognized and unrecorded. Coarse brown paper cover which
appears to be homemade. Very Fine. |
