CSA #12 (KB) (margin a little close on the left) tied by a slightly smeared strike of the BLACK Petersburg, Va CDS (date not apparent). Light brown coarse paper cover with a local Military Address to Capt T. A. Martin, 13th Regiment of SC Troops, Petersburg, Va. Very interesting Overpaid Drop Letter. The address is incorrect as to unit as Thomas A. Martin was Captain of Co E 13th NC Inf (not SC as in the address) and promoted Major of the Regiment 1/19/1865 thus dating this cover to either late DEC 1864 or early JAN 1865. Capt Martin was wounded in the hip at Gettysburg 7/1/1863 but returned to his unit about 13 months later on 7/30/1864. He surrendered with his unit at Appomattox CH 4/9/1865. Minor backflap opening tear and a little light overall soiling but still very presentable and an excellent use. Ex-John Hill.
