CSA #11c (AD)
(4-Margin Greenish-Blue) tied the RED
Petersburg, Va
CDS 20 SEP (1864). Coarse brown paper cover which appears to be
homemade addressed to Capt W. O. Harrelson, Craigsville PO, Gaston
County, NC. Craigsville NC apparently no longer exists as it cannot be found on a
current map of North Carolina, and Craigsville is not listed as a
Confederate post office. However, Craigsville appears on the 1862 list
of USA post offices in Gaston County. The red Petersburg mark is
well struck and clear which is unusual for this mark. Very Fine cover.
William Oliver Harrelson (1830-1925) enlisted as a private in Co E 34th NC Inf
on 9/11/1861. He was promoted 1st Sergt, Commissioned 2nd Lieut, and
promoted 1st Lieut a few weeks later, and finally Capt all in early
1862. He is listed as wounded and captured as a POW at Gaines' Mill, Va
6/27/1862 and confined at Fort Columbus NY and Fort Warren in Boston
Harbor until exchanged 8/5/1862. He resigned for disability (presumably
because of his wounds) 12/13/1862. Capt Harrelson had a brother, James
Franklin Harrelson (1821-1890), who served as a Corpl in the 11th NC Inf and was present at the Siege of Petersburg and is the most likely sender of this cover. |
