#4 Stone 2 Position 29
(4-Margin but close at the bottom and a very dry printing)
tied by a partial strike of the Staunton, Va
CDS (date not apparent). Small cover which was originally a folded
letter, but the sheet that contained the letter was cut off some time
in the past. Addressed to
Mrs. A.
C. Hopkins, Hampden Sidney, Va. The addressee was the wife of Rev Abner
Crump Hopkins (1835-1911) who most likely was the sender of this cover.
Rev Hopkins married Anne Pleasants Atkinson (1839-1912) in May 1861.
Rev Hopkins, an 1855 graduate of Hampden Sydney College, was the
chaplain of the 2nd Va Inf
in the Stonewall Brigade of Stonewall Jackson's Army of the Valley
beginning in May 1862. He was also General Jackson's personal chaplain.
Later he was chaplain of the entire 2nd Corps ANV. After the war, he
lived in Charlestown, West Virginia, where he was pastor of the
Presbyterian Church of Charles Town. Rev Hopkin's Civil War Diary is
preserved at the Virginia Historical Society Library. A pencil notation
inside the folded cover (which may or may not be period) gives the
date May 10, 1862 which is right about the time Rev Hopkins joined the
2nd Va Inf as its chaplain. Very clean cover.
