Handstamp PAID 5 with the San Antonio, Tex CDS 29 NOV (1861) Type C. Two color cover with the “PAID 5” handstamp in RED and the CDS in BLUE. Orange paper cover addressed to Hon T. J. Word Palestine, Texas. Army of New Mexico Sibley Expedition
related cover from the Word Correspondence. There is no endorsement on
this cover, but it is known from the handwriting on the cover and from
another cover in the correspondence that the sender was Major Alexander
M. Jackson, an officer on General Sibley’s staff who served as the AAG
and as Gen Sibley’s ADC during the expedition. This cover was sent from
San Antonio where the troops were gathering just prior to moving out to
Fort Bliss near El Paso. This cover appears as an illustration and is
explained in detail in the “Confederate New Mexico” section Page 390 of
the Collector’s Guide to Confederate Philately Second Edition.
Cover slightly reduced at the right not affecting anything and a sealed
horizontal edge tear at the right center. Otherwise a Very Fine
appearance and an important historical item. |
