Stampless PAID cover with the small Alleton, Tex double ring dateless postmark and handstamp PAID 10 Type D. Addressed to Miss Ada Le Pert, Millican, Texas. Advertising Cover with a fancy handstamp oval at the upper left corner "C. W. McMahan & Co. Commission Merchants and Cotton Factors." Reduced at right where opened not affecting anything. Very scarce Texas postal use as only a small handful of Alleton Type D CSA covers are known. Some minor foxing but still a Very clean cover. Ex-Weill Brothers, Ex-Camina. Alleton was a town in Colorado County. The postmark is misspelled. The official name of the town is "Alleyton." Alleyton was an important railroad town west of Houston in the 1860's with a post office established in 1860 but greatly decreased in importance after the war. During the war, cotton was shipped by rail to Alleyton (the terminus of the railroad at that time) and then by ox carts to Brownsville. The cotton was then taken from Brownsville across the border into Mexico and loaded onto British ships for transport and sale in England thus going around the blockade. C. W. McMahon & Co. was located in Alleyton and was undoubtedly involved in this cross border cotton trade during the war. Today, Alleyton is simply an unincorporated area with few residents. The post office closed in 1958.
