CSA #7 Vert Pair which appears to be on London Paper affixed sideways (top of the upper stamp cut off at the edge of the cover) tied by a partial double strike of the BLUE Hempstead, Tex CDS
1- OCT (1862). Very small orange paper cover addressed to Rev T. E.
Johnson Caldwell Co., Tex with the original letter. Small reduction at
the right where opened. Small amount of corner wear. Very clean and presentable cover with an
excellent letter.
The letter is lengthy (4 pages) written on
heavy commercially made letter paper and is quite easy to read. Fold
splits reinforced with archival tape. The letter between two friends,
or perhaps relatives, is datelined "Camp Groce October 14 1862"
and is written by a soldier. In 1862, Camp Groce was a training camp
for Texas recruits located near Hempstead, Texas. The letter is signed
"S. G. Sherman." S. G. Sherman of Burleson County (1821-1868) was
serving as a private in Co C 20th Tex Inf, a regiment which
essentially spent the war guarding the coast near Galveston. According
to the letter, Pvt Sherman was on detached service to take care of the
regimental baggage. The letter has much personal references and much
information about conditions and the current situation. "Galveston is now in the hands of the Federals." (Galveston
was captured by the Union in early October 1862 and recaptured by the
CSA in August 1862). A full typed transcript of the letter is included.
