CSA #12 (AD) (4-Margin) tied by the Palestine, Tex
(Anderson County) CDS 18 MAY. Cover is from the well-known Word Correspondence addressed
to Miss Jetty Word Care of Hon Wm M. Taylor, Crockett, Houston Co.,
Texas. The Word Correspondence contains covers from Mesilla, New
Mexico, from the Sibley Expedition. Jetty Word had a brother, Pvt John
Jackson Word of Capt Gardner's Company of Steele's Regiment of the
Sibley New Mexico Expedition, who wrote letters home to Palestine from
the Expedition. This cover is well after the New Mexico expedition and
is not from the addressee's brother. Jetty Word's father was Thomas
Jefferson Word (1805-1890), a lawyer, a politician, and a signer of the
Texas Articles of Secession. The sender of this cover to Miss Word is
not identified but could be her father. William A. Taylor was a respected judge in Crockett,
Texas. His relationship to the Word family is not known. Sealed tears
at the upper left but still a very clean appearing cover. |
