Turned Cover --
First
Use (inside) -- (stamps missing) showing a partial RED Alexandria, La
CDS (date not apparent). Addressed to James B. McMahon Esqr, Burkville,
Newton Co., Texas.
Second Use (outside) -- Stampless PAID
cover with manuscript "Burkville (Texas) 24 DEC 1864" and manuscript
"Paid 10." Very obscure post office in Newton County. Newton County is in far southeast Texas on the Louisiana border north
of Beaumont. I believe this may be the listing cover for Burkeville, Texas, in the
current CSA Catalog. There are a number of covers addressed to
Burkeville (sometimes spelled Burkville). I was only able to find one
other example of a cover from Burkeville in a 2001 Siegel auction. Military Address to Friend R. McMahon, Forney's Division,
Sabine Town, Texas. Cover
with a clean appearance, minor corner wear at the right, one side back
flap missing, and reduced a bit at the left not affecting anything.
Very presentable cover.
Friend Robinson McMahon (1837-1916) entered service as a private in Co H 13th Tex Cav
2/1/1862 and was later promoted Commissary Sergt. He served for the
duration of the war. The Federal Census of 1870 lists him as a farmer
in Newton County, Texas, after the war. He married Martha E. Fuller
McMahon (1840-1925), the likely sender of this cover from Burkeville,
in 1861 and had 13 children. The 13th Tex Cav
was dismounted in 1862 and served throughout the war in the
Trans-Mississippi and took part in the Red River Campaign. The first
use from Alexandria, La, was most likely sent by Sergt McMahon as
it is addressed to a relative in Burkeville. |
