CSA #12 (AD) (4-Margin) Pen-Canceled and manuscrit "Kickapoo (Texas) May 5th"
at the left. Addressed to Mrs. S. C. Hull, Woods PO, Panola County,
Texas. Kickapoo was a small listed CSA post office in Anderson County.
The town was established in 1848 named for the Kickapoo Indian Tribe.
The post office opened in 1850 and closed in 1905 as the town had
declined after the war. By the 1930's, Kickapoo, Texas, went out of
existence. Kickapoo is listed in the CSA Catalog, but there are only a
very few CSA covers related to Kickapoo known to still exist..
The
addressee, Sarah Ann Hull (1826-1906), was the wife of Edwin Sealey
Hull (1816-1909) who was appointed postmaster of Woods, Texas, in 1859
and is listed as a fairly wealthy merchant on the Federal Census of
1860. He did have service as a private in the 1st Batt Texas State Troops Cavalry
which was a six month unit organized in mid 1863 and disbanded in early
1864. The Hull's had a son, James H. L. Hull (1843-1906),
who entered service 10/1/1861 as a Sergt in Co F 10th Tex Cav and
served throughout the war. His unit served in the Army of Kentucky and
later in the Army of Tennessee. After the war, Sergt Hull farmed
in North Carolina. The wartime correspondence between Sergt Hull and
his mother is extensive and has been published. But the actual sender
of this cover cannot be identified with certainty. |
