TX413 Stampless PAID cover with the GREEN San Antonio, Tex CDS and the handstamp RED PAID 5 Type C 13 NOV 1861. Beautiful two color strikes of the postal markings. The cover is from the well-documented Word Correspondence addressed to Miss Jettie Word, Palestine, Texas. This correspondence is associated with the New Mexico Sibley Expedition. Very Fine Appearance.

The Sibley Expedition and the Word Correspondence is described in detail with multiple illustrations in the Collector's Guide to Confederate Philately Second Edition Pages 388-392. This cover was sent from San Antonio when the Sibley Expedition was being organized just before moving to Fort Bliss in El Paso and embarking on the invasion of New Mexico as the Army of New Mexico. Illustrated on Page 392 of the Guidebook is an El Paso, Texas, cover from June 1862 at the end of the Sibley Expedition with the same handwriting as this cover. The handwriting identifies the sender as (Private) "J. J. Word, Capt Garner's Co, Steele's Reg, Sibley's Brigade" writing home to his sister.

John Jackson Word (1843-1909) enlisted as a private in Co I 7th Tex Cav 5/1/1861, a Sibley Expedition unit. After the Sibley Expedition, the unit remained in Texas and the Trans-Mississippi. No further information on Pvt Word's service. After the war, he married Katie Bowser in 1869 and lived in Palestine, Texas, serving as the Mayor of Palestine 1889-1891. The Federal Census of 1880 identifies him as a lawyer in Palestine.
