Stampless PAID cover with the GREEN San Antonio, Tex CDS and the handstamp RED PAID 5 Type
C 13 NOV 1861. Beautiful two color strikes of the postal markings. The
cover is from the well-documented Word Correspondence addressed to Miss
Jettie Word, Palestine, Texas. This correspondence is associated with the New Mexico Sibley Expedition. Very Fine Appearance.

Pages 388-392. This cover was sent from San Antonio when the Sibley
Expedition was being organized just before moving to Fort Bliss in El
Paso and embarking on the invasion of New Mexico as the Army of New
Mexico. Illustrated on Page 392 of the Guidebook is an El Paso,
Texas, cover from June 1862 at the end of the Sibley Expedition
with the same
handwriting as this cover. The handwriting identifies the sender
as (Private) "J. J. Word, Capt Garner's Co, Steele's Reg, Sibley's
Brigade" writing home to his sister.
John Jackson Word (1843-1909) enlisted as a private in Co I 7th Tex Cav
5/1/1861, a Sibley Expedition unit. After the Sibley Expedition, the
unit remained in Texas and the Trans-Mississippi. No further
information on Pvt Word's service. After the war, he married Katie
Bowser in 1869 and lived in Palestine, Texas, serving as the Mayor of
Palestine 1889-1891. The Federal Census of 1880 identifies him as a
