USA #26
(two singles arranged tete-beche foot-to-foot paying the double weight
rate) tied together and to the cover by the small double circle Galveston, Tex
CDS 14 MAR (1861). Year of use confirmed by period receiving docketing
at the left. Appears to be a somewhat crudely constructed homemade
larger sized cover possibly using a newspaper wrapper to make the
cover. Reduced a bit at left where opened. Addressed to Miss Fanny C.
B. Grimes, Rocky Hill, Connecticut. USA Used in CSA Texas to Union Connecticut. Very clean appearing cover and an excellent postal use.
The original letter remains with the cover (four pages on blue lined notebook paper) and is datelined "Galveston Texas C. S. A." The writer begins by saying that he received that morning by post a 3 month old copy of the Hartford Daily Post newspaper (apparently the source of the wrapper from which the envelope was made) and that he was sending a copy of the Texas Advocate
back to Miss Fanny (this would account for the double weight) who sent
him the Hartford newspaper. The letter talks about the politics of the
day and "abolition" referring to articles in the Hartford newspaper.
The letter is signed only "Eldrige", and the writer addresses Miss
Fanny as "Friend." The handwriting is somewhat difficult to read and
would certainly benefit from a transcription. (Only the first page of the four page letter is shown.) |
