TX409 CSA #13 - Two covers with the 20c Green Bisect used to pay the 10c postage. One cover shows the upper diagonal bisect, and the other cover shows the lower diagonal bisect. The bisects are from two different stamps, not the same stamp. Both covers are from the same correspondence and tied accross the bisect by the small double circle Galveston, Tex CDS. Both covers used on the same day 17 MAR (1865). Addressed to Mrs. W. P. Laughter, Dixie, (via Texana), Jackson County, Texas. Dixie was a very obscure Texas post office. Texana was the Court House of Jackson County.

First Cover - Upper Diagonal Bisect - Blue paper cover with a very clean appearance. Ex-Kohn, Ex-Matz.

Second Cover - Lower Diagonal Bisect - Adversity Cover made from a printed but unused Army form. Has not been cut or folded for display.  Endorsed at left "W. P. Laughter Sgt Major 2nd T C (Texas Cavalry)". Very clean cover. Molesworth note on the reverse. CSA Certificate 1982 signed by Morris Everett.

William Pearson Laughter Sr (1840-1900) entered service as a private in Co D 2nd Texas Cavalry 4/15/1861 and later rose to the rank of Sgt-Major. Pvt Laughter was with his unit as a member of the Army of New Mexico and took part in the unsuccessful Sibley Expedition of late 1861 into early 1862. Afterwards, the unit spent the rest of the war in Louisiana and Texas. The 1860 Federal Census lists his occupation as a 20 year old Attorney which is possibly incorrect as the postwar censuses list him as a farmer in Jackson County, Texas. In September 1864, he married Sarah Angeline Gertrude Kerr (1843-1868). Since the covers were sent by Sgt-Major Laughter to his wife in March, that dates the cover to a very late March 1865 use.

These two covers were reported together in a short article by Robert E. Baker titled "Two Classic Galveston Bisect Covers" which appeared in the August 1998 issue of the Texas Postal History Society Journal. In the article, the author misidentified the bisects as coming from the same stamp when they are from two different stamps and also misidentified the addressee by misinterpreting the handwriting. A copy of the article is included with the covers. These two covers belong together and will only be sold as a pair.
