Stampless PAID cover with the small single rim Jasper, Tex CDS and handstamp PAID 10 Type D 28 DEC. Military Address to Lieut G. R. Niles of the "Bartow Artillery", Camp Jasper near Savannah, Georgia. Adversity Cover made from heavy lined notebook / ledger paper. Small clip to the upper left corner, otherwise Very Fine.
Very
interesting that a cover would have both Jasper, Texas (1835), and a
Jasper, Georgia (1853), connection as both Jaspers were named after
William Jasper, a hero of the Revolutionary War who was killed planting
an American Flag at the Battle of Sullivans Island in Savannah in 1779.
George Riley Niles (1832-1906) entered service as a Corpl in Co A 60th Ga Inf 8/21/1861. He was transferred to Co A 22nd Ga Siege Heavy Artillery (Bartow Artillery).
He was promoted 1st Sergt 12/28/1861 and elected 2nd Lieut 1/16/1862,
promoted 1st Lieut 3/25/1863, and Capt 1/16/1864. He was paroled with
the Army of Tennessee 4/28/1864 at Greensboro NC. The unit served
mainly on the Georgia coast. After the war, he resided in Griffin,
Georgia, as a businessman and merchant. No connection could be
found between the addressee and any family members or relatives in
Jasper, Texas. Since there is no enclosure, it is unknown who would
have sent this cover from Jasper, Texas, to Camp Jasper, Georgia. |
