TN457 CSA #2 H&L Position 16 (three good margins but just touching at the bottom right) affixed sideways and tied by the BLUE Nashville, Ten  CDS with a JAN (1862) date. Addressed to Mrs. Julia W. Foster Care Capt R. C. Foster, Genl Anderson's Brigade, Winchester, Va. Small reduction at the top not affecting anything. Central vertical file fold through the address. Period edge ink stain (fingerprint) at the upper left. Very Presentable cover.

Robert C. Foster (1824-1879), a medical doctor from Nashville and an 1850 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, entered service as a line officer as Capt of Co C 1st Ten Inf 5/9/1861. It appears that Capt Foster's wife was with him in Winchester at the time of this cover. He was appointed Acting Assistant Surgeon 11/16/1862. Later in mid 1863 promoted Surgeon PACS and served the remainder of the war in various military hospitals. After the war, he practiced medicine in Nashville where he is buried.
