CSA #7 Horz Pair (4-Margin with filled-in-frame
on the right CC 7-R-v2) not canceled. Affixed to cover with no postal
markings. The stamps may or may not be original to the cover. Full
period Military Address (mentions two Generals, Daniel Weisiger Adams
and John C. Breckenridge) to Pr Gideon S. Bond Care of Capt S. A.
Headen, Company F, 16th Regt La Vols, Adams Brigade, Breckenridges
Division, Tullahoma, Tennessee. The military address would date the
cover to late 1862 or early 1863. Very small commercially made green
lined lady's type stationery envelope with part of back top flap
missing. The absence of postal markings indicates that the cover was
most likely handcarried perhaps by a soldier returning to his unit
after a furlough with the stamps added later. No way of knowing for
sure. Very clean cover.
Gideon Smith Bond (1836-1914) enlisted as a private in Co B 16th La Inf 9/1/1862.
The company designation in the address is incorrect. His military
records are essentially non-existent except for his enlistment, but he
did survive the war. The 16th La Inf
fought in the major engagements in
the Western Theater (Army of Tennessee). The Federal Census of 1860
lists Gideon S. Bond as a "Farm Laborer." He was living in Sabine,
La in 1860. Later censuses list him as married and a farmer near
Tangipahoa, La where he is buried. Could not find a Capt Headen
associated with the 16th La Inf or anywhere else in the Confederate
Army. |
